Simulated Engine Failures

This week we cover what to do (or not to do) in the event the engine fails in flight. Bit ropey on the basics during this flight. Last few flying hours have been focusing on the circuit & its clear I’m a bit rusty on the basics. Some good skills picked up here though, particularly in identifying potential landing spots, how to think about the ‘cone’ coming off of a runway, difference between slow turns and steep turns when considering altitude loss in a turn. Useful lesson, really enjoyed it.

Second Take Off

Landings & Circuits

NPPL Excercise 12; take offs, circuits & getting set up for landings. Took a while to get the rudder control/ power balance but got there in the end. Looking long is key on take off right from the start, in the landings pick your spot just past the threshold and when it comes to the round out, look long again so rudder control isn’t jumpy.

Circuits Practice

Final Take-off, circuit & landing of the day. Intense one. Speed dropped off on the turn to final from base, threw off the concentration a bit. Managed to piece the phases of the landing (approach – round out – main wheel contact – front wheel contact) together though so a great end to the lesson.. nearly at Solo?

First Solo

This feels long awaited. Today, after 3 circuits, my instructor got out of the plane, shut the door and I was completely alone in charge of the aircraft. First time as PIC. What a rush! Whole host of emotions..
